Winemaking

João Portugal Ramos is one of the success stories of modern Portuguese wine industry. In a relatively short time his eponymous winery has grown from a small base to one of the largest in Portugal, and with their modern upfront fruit and clear varietal labeling his wines have been a hit on the export markets.

Ramos started his carrer with noted Alentejo winery Quinta do Carmo in 1985, subequently sold to the French Château Lafite.

As a sign of how the Alentejo has grown as a region, when João made his first wine in 1986, there were just 15 hectares of vines planted west of Estremoz, whereas now there are some 400.

Although he developed quite a reputation for his consulting work, João wanted to do his own thing. He started aquiring vineyard land in 1990, and in 1997 built his first winery by renovating a building on an old proprety, this now houses João´s current Alentejo operation. By the time of his first vintage, he had 6 hectares of his own and 45 hectares under contract, where he managed the vineyard work. Now he has 200 hectares of his own and 200 under contract.

In 2004 he branched out his Alentejo base to launch a new winery in Ribatejo, Almeirim. This is the home of Tagus Creek, a stunningly sophisticated and modern winery, which allows Falua to produce 1.5 million bottles of red, white and rosé wines of high quality.

To reflect the modernity of this winery, it was decided to build a striking metallic edifice which would stand out as beeing modern and different when compared to other more traditional wineries of the area.
